Log of the voyage

The brief

The app had to put the day's activity, the next workout and the streak on one screen, guide a person through a session set by set, and follow them outdoors on a run.

The course we set

Dark, high-contrast screens built for sweaty hands: oversized controls, a countdown ring for each round and numbers that stay readable mid-stride. One design system, six colours and two typefaces. Progress turns raw workout data into day, week, month and year views and a streak heatmap.

The landing

The finished app opens on activity rings, live vitals, a weekly streak and today's plan. A workout shows time, calories and moves up front, then switches to a focused live mode with a countdown ring and live heart rate. A run draws its route live on a dark map with kilometre markers, pace, time, heart rate and splits.

The Mile-Marker Serpent

A run is the one screen a person reads while moving. The route has to be drawn live as the position arrives, with distance, pace, time, heart rate and the split of every kilometre readable at a glance, and with controls that work for a thumb on a sweaty screen.

How it was tamed

A live route sits above a single bottom sheet that holds the numbers runners check most: distance, average pace, time and heart rate, with kilometre markers on the map and a split for each kilometre. The fastest split stands out in volt lime, and the lock, pause and stop buttons are large and placed for one hand.

Soundings, counted in the finished app

  • 5core screens, from home to GPS run
  • 4periods in Progress: day, week, month and year
  • 20weeks of consistency in the streak heatmap
  • 6colours in one design system
