A taste profile in three sliders

Body, tannin and sweetness: why a bottle gets three small sliders instead of five stars.

Stars tell you whether people liked a wine. They do not tell you what it tastes like, which is what a shopper is trying to guess from a label. Cellar describes each bottle with three sliders: body, tannin and sweetness.

Three is the number I can defend. Each is something a person can feel without training: how heavy the wine is, how much it dries the mouth, how sweet it is. On the product page each slider is read-only, drawn as a short rule with a mark on it, and the same three values feed the filters in the catalog, so 'full-bodied, low tannin' is a query and not a sentence.

Food pairings sit right under the sliders, and together they do more work than the description. The part that took design time was the empty state. A wine without taste data shows nothing, not three sliders resting at the middle, because a default that looks like a measurement is worse than a gap.
